How to Break into the Recruiting Industry

When thinking about careers in the recruiting industry your first hurdle is often your biggest one: How to get my foot in the door?

A great way to do this is through internships and summer jobs. It can be a struggle to find these opportunities on your own. This is where we come in! As one of the UK’s leading IT recruitment specialists in the country, we know what it takes to succeed. Better yet, we can set those looking to make a start in the industry on the right path.

Recruiting Jack: Our Training Programme Poster Boy

When Jack first started with us in August 2019, he had no prior experience in the recruitment industry. After studying IT and Business at Southend College, he knew that he wanted to enter into some form of IT. As such he set to looking for opportunities that tied his love of tech to the recruitment industry. Looking for a local opportunity, Jack came across our training programme. After a thoroughly impressive interview, and demonstrated SAP research, we knew we had to take him! We think you’ll find his story inspirational—and educational.

How We Trained Jack

We are big believers in on-the-job training. There is no experience like first-hand! We give our entry-level recruiters real assignments. These tasks need to be completed within a set timeframe, and we trust them implicitly. Jack’s conversational approach was key to his communication with candidates. He applied this to his role along with an impressive work ethic and dogged determination to thrive. Through working with our Leadership Team (in particular Colin Taylor, Practice Manager) Jack has been channelled into a refined, professional recruiter.

“I really got to get to grips with speaking to candidates on a regular basis. From there it’s been a really positive journey”, Jack recently told us, when asked about his experience with the Maxegan training programme.

We believe that everyone we take on can achieve at a high level. As a result, we offer all of the support and education possible to help our team thrive! Our senior consultants play a crucial part in this, allowing our trainees to shadow them, showing them the ropes in real-time. We feel that allowing our trainees to take ownership of their clients and responsibilities early on is crucial to their development.

Jack added, “This role has helped me to grow my own self-esteem. I cannot emphasise enough, the importance of working with a good manager who cares about your progress.”

Since starting with us, we are proud to announce that Jack has grown from strength to strength, taking charge of his own set of clients, and has received several pay rises to reflect the level that he has worked tirelessly to get to!

We also want to ensure that our newer recruits continue to feel this encouragement after their training is complete. Jack went on to explain: “Still to this day, the leadership team is very supportive. It’s an open office so it’s not a case of ‘I’ve got to send an email’ to get hold of Rich (Managing Director) or Colin and speak to them. They always welcome a knock on the door, and are happy to talk through problems with you.”

Our Guide to Recruiting: What we will teach you…

Jack was taken through a number of key areas in which he needed to become proficient. These are as follows:

  • How to identify the client’s needs
  • Identify traits or skills that the client typically hires
  • Understand the day-to-day responsibility of the position, pushing back if necessary to ask detailed questions
  • Use job boards and actively search for CVs
  • Build searches
  • Manage internal systems to keep reliable records and work within GDPR
  • Identify the most suited candidates
  • Work with the candidates to ensure the relevant information stands out on their CV
  • Organise timings, methods, and locations of an interview with both clients and candidates
  • Manage all aspects of the feedback and move an offer through to an acceptance

What Is It Like to Work In The Recruiting Industry?

The recruiting industry can be hectic and hard. No two days are the same, and it is a fast-paced, constantly changing environment. Jack’s opinion on this: “The work environment is very good. It’s not a case of you’re sitting in an office and you can’t wait for 5:30. You’re working on good, live roles constantly and it keeps us busy!”.

If you are someone who thrives off high energy and challenge, then you may have what it takes to succeed as a recruiter! For those who are willing to put in the hard work and determination required, there is a wealth of recruitment avenues and positions available.

How Do I Find Job Openings As An Entry-Level Recruiter?

Many who are looking for a job in today’s societal climate are faced with a paradox. “You need the job to get some experience, but you need some experience to get the job.” At Maxegan, we strive to put an end to this vicious cycle that has let so much talent slip through the net.

We want to speak with dynamic individuals. Based on our experience, you can find a great match from multiple industries; call centre environments, estate agencies, B2B and B2C sales, holiday reps, retail or any role where you have been previously trained to ask questions and listen to the answers for that matter. When you can make decisions based on what you are hearing, and how to progress a call, the foundations have already been laid! There are fantastic earning potentials for people who ‘ask well and listen well’ and we’d love to explore them with you.

Please send your CV to richard@maxegan.co.uk with a brief introduction to yourself as the person behind the document! We can’t wait to hear from you.
